Our Story

The name Livia is more than a title. It reflects our founder’s deep connection to nature and our enduring commitment to conservation.

A passionate birdwatcher and life member of the Field Ornithology Group of Sri Lanka (FOGSL), our co-founder has long drawn inspiration from the island’s avifauna. Among the most cherished visitors to his balcony was the gentle Spotted Dove, a symbol of peace, resilience, and harmony with the natural world.

In searching for a name that would embody this connection, we turned to scientific literature and discovered Columba livia, the Rock Dove. A species with ecological significance across Sri Lanka, particularly along the eastern coast and around Pigeon Island National Park, it represents adaptability and coexistence. The name resonated instantly.

Livia was chosen for its direct link to the natural world and as a reminder of responsibility. As wild habitats face increasing environmental pressure, Livia Ceylon Tours is committed to being part of the solution. We have initiated discussions with academic experts in habitat conservation and pledged that a percentage of our revenue will directly support scientific conservation initiatives, ensuring that our growth contributes meaningfully to the protection of vulnerable species and ecosystems.

The name also carries historical depth through Livia Drusilla, a prominent Roman empress, subtly reflecting legacy and enduring influence.

In every endeavor we undertake, Livia remains a quiet promise to celebrate Sri Lanka’s wildlife, operate with integrity, and leave a lasting positive impact on the island’s biodiversity.

Our Founders

Sarath Senanayake

Co-Founder & CEO

Sarath’s relationship with nature is both personal and lifelong. An avid birdwatcher, he is a Life Member of the Field Ornithology Group of Sri Lanka (FOGSL) and a member of the Wildlife and Nature Protection Society (WNPS). Having personally explored over 90% of Sri Lanka’s birding hotspots, from the mist-covered plains of Horton Plains to the vibrant wetlands of Bundala, Sarath ensures that every Livia Ceylon journey is rooted in firsthand field knowledge and an authentic understanding of biodiversity.

With over three decades of professional experience, Sarath serves as the strategic and ethical backbone of Livia Ceylon. Long before sustainability became a global priority, he founded Green Life Enterprises in 2003, pioneering plastic recycling initiatives in Kandy, and later served as Director of Environmental Education for the Asian Environmental Protection Organization. His continued work in solid waste management, youth education, and environmental advocacy directly informs our regenerative tourism practices today.

A Member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing (MCIM – UK), Sarath seamlessly blends global marketing expertise with an uncompromising commitment to conservation. His vision is simple yet profound: to share Sri Lanka’s natural tapestry while ensuring that every journey leaves a positive, lasting legacy for wildlife, ecosystems, and local communities.
